A few centuries ago, the current peninsula comprised of Fischland - Darß- Zingst was a chain of independent islets. As a result of the currents and of storms in the Baltic Sea, the individual Baltic islets united. »Germany's most beautiful peninsula« has a broad diversity of vegetation. Ranging from white sandy beaches to high steep banks, from dense »jungle« to endless pastures of salt grass: This peninsula has quite an offer!
The hook-shaped peninsula chain stretches from Mecklenburg's Dierhagen in Fischland across Darßand Zingst through to Pramort. Measuring almost 55 km in length, the peninsula extends into the sea at the Bodden chain.
The Darß located between the Baltic Sea and Bodden is one of Germany's most natural sceneries. The Bodden are a chain of flat waters between the Darß peninsula and the mainland. The Bodden waters are also used economically. The reeds are used to cover the roofs of many houses in the region. This area forms part of the Nationalpark Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft. The national park and its 80 500 ha in size is the largest in Central Europe and stretches from the Darßforest to the west, to Lake Hidden and West Rügen in the East. The islets situated off the Zingst peninsula with their highly diverse universe of birds, animals and plants, are also deemed an oasis by nature conservationists.
